1. Peace will come when we invest in the people of Iraq Four years ago, on May 1, President Bush indicated that the Iraq mission was accomplished. We know that peace will not come if we don’t invest in the people of Iraq. This week, President Bush will likely veto the Fiscal 2007 Emergency Iraq/Hurricane Supplemental Appropriations bill (HR1519).  We succeeded in ensuring that the Senate and House included allotments for Iraqi economic development and refugee assistance. Now we must let the President know that these pieces are essential components to building peace in Iraq.   We urge you to send a message to President Bush and tell him that we need to invest in the people of Iraq.  Economic development by Iraqis and for Iraqis is a key factor in establishing peace. Let the President know you do not want him to veto HR 1519. You can send an e-mail via NETWORK’s web site at http://capwiz.com/networklobby/issues/alert/?alertid=9693111&type=PR

2. Free the Appropriators to fund human needs The next two weeks are crucial for acceptance of the FY2008 Budget.  The House and the Senate have each passed their budget resolutions – now a conference committee must bring the two bills together.  Once they have, the joint resolution must be passed, to ensure a reasonable path to funding of such federal programs as child care, Medicaid and SCHIP, low-income and elderly housing assistance, low-income heating assistance, and the many other basic human needs for which we all work so hard.   Send your Senators and Representative the message that it is critical to pass a budget resolution. This will ensure clear allocations for appropriations and will free the members of appropriations subcommittees to do their work of funding critical programs.     1. Encourage them to tell members of the conference committee that they must quickly develop a plan which will be acceptable to all members of Congress.     2. Tell them to vote in favor of the Joint Resolution, as it is presented by the Conference Committee.   You can send an e-mail via NETWORK’s web site at http://capwiz.com/networklobby/issues/alert/?alertid=9693431&type=CO.
