Minimum Wage
The Senate is poised to vote on a cloture measure Tuesday, limiting debate over raising the minimum wage. Ask your senator to vote for cloture, and then to vote against any amendments which limit worker’s rights or provide even more tax advantages to corporations.
Passage of the minimum wage bill (S.2) is delayed because some members have been stalling with what Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass.) is calling “filibuster [obstruction] by amendment and delay.” Over 200 amendments have now been proposed on issues ranging from anti-immigrant, anti-worker, social security, education to more tax cuts. It is imperative that the bill be passed with the least number of amendments to ensure quick passage.
A sample message that you can use to e-mail your Senators is at http://capwiz.com/networklobby/issues/alert/?alertid=9304156&type=CO -- enter your zip code, click GO and follow the directions. Escalation in Iraq
On January 27, thousands of protesters gathered in Washington D.C. and other cities around the United States to voice their opposition to the troop surge in Iraq.
NETWORK continues to oppose such an escalation. It is important to keep the pressure on the Senate as several resolutions opposing escalation of U.S. troops to Iraq will be up for a vote this week. Write or call your Senators and urge them to vote for these resolutions.
NETWORK has a message that you can use as the basis for your message. Even if you sent a message last week, you can modify it and send it again this week. And when you send your message, use the “Tell a Friend” option to let your friends and family know that they can do this too.
