Food Emergency in Africa’s Sahel Region
Food Emergency in Africa's Sahel Region:
A legislative alert from Catholic Relief Services
Urge your Senators to adequately fund Title II food aid in FY 2006 agriculture appropriations
August 3, 2005
Why this issue is important: According to United Nations warnings and confirmation by Catholic Relief Services (CRS) staff, an estimated 12.6 million people in the Sahel—including Burkina Faso, Ghana, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal—are facing severe food shortages and possible starvation. In Niger alone, where drought and an infestation of locusts destroyed much of this year’s crops and seeds for future planting, 3.6 million people are confronting a severe food emergency.
TAKE ACTION NOW! Contact your Senators and urge them to co-sponsor, if they have not done so already, Senate resolution 227 sponsored by Senators Mike DeWine (R-OH) and Herb Kohl (D-WI) in support of U.S. food aid and to ask that they adequately fund Title II food aid in FY 2006.
