Legislative alerts from NETWORK
The Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA)

Please continue to write your Congresspersons to oppose the passage of the Central American Free Trade Agreement (CAFTA). Click here for a letter and enter your ZIP Code in the “Take Action Now” box.

The accord should be defeated because of its consequences for farmers, consumers and indigenous people, as well as workers whose rights will be weakened. Further, provisions in the agreement allow public services such as the distribution of water and health to be privatized, making them unaffordable for countless people.

The outcome of the agreement will be determined by the outcome of the elections. CAFTA could be a part of the legislative agenda in a lame duck session scheduled for November 15.

New landmine resource
The U.S. remains one of just 14 countries left in the world that produce or reserve the right to produce anti-personnel mines. While most of the world is working to build a mine-free world through a global mine-ban treaty, the U.S. maintains an arsenal of roughly 17.5 million mines. In response to this stain on U.S. foreign and military policy, the U.S. Campaign to Ban Landmines has launched a new creative online flash video (just one-minute long) about the global landmine crisis. The online video urges the presidential candidates to support U.S. accession to the 1997 Mine-Ban Treaty and then asks for you to sign the online petition that follows.
