Call to Action convenes 30th annual conference
Call To Action is holding its 30th annual national conference, “I AM! Rise Up, People of God!” November 3-5 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The theme encourages participants to recognize the divine in themselves and others and act with justice and respect for all.
The event, held at the Midwest Airline Center, will include six optional pre-conference seminars, six sessions of presentations, two morning prayer sessions, multiple special non-violent action training sessions, three main plenary speakers, and other special events. The three main speakers are Joan Chittister, O.S.B., at 8 p.m. Friday; Jeanette Rodriguez, chair of the theology department at Seattle University, at 4 p.m. Saturday; and Diana Hayes, a professor of systematic theology at Georgetown University, at 9 a.m. Sunday.
The presentations cover a vast range of topics of interest to Catholics working to renew and reform the church. There will be reflections on the church in relationship with pluralism, religious fundamentalisms, sex abuse, race, globalization, immigration, the war on terror, the LGBT community, women, science, and other social justice concerns. There will also be performances, prayers, and Eucharists, including ones celebrated by women and married priests.
Cindy Sheehan, the active Catholic from Vacaville, California who lost her son in Iraq and became a vocal opponent of the war, will speak during the last session on Saturday night and will be honored with the 2006 Leadership Award on Sunday morning.
There are also special programs for children, teenagers, and young adults in their 20s and 30s.
