More than 1 million nationwide march for immigration reform
Marchers demonstrated for immigration reform in cities big and small across the United States on May 1. Chicago and Los Angeles played host to the largest demonstrations with the Chicago Loop essentially shut down as more than 400,000 marched in support of a comprehensive reform of the U.S. immigration laws with an eye to formalizing the status of the estimated 11 to 12 million undocumented people now resident in the United States.

Various proposals for redrawing federal immigration statutes are currently before Congress, including, from the Senate, plans to stagger citizenship for undocumented residents based on the number of years they have lived in the U.S. and the creation of a new guest worker program aimed at stemming the persistent flow of undocumented people, primarily from Mexico and Central America, into the U.S.

Other proposals, coming out of the House of Representatives, are more draconian, seeking to criminalize aid to undocumented people and to create improved physical barriers at the border.
