Marching on Washington and against a new war
A broad coalition of peace and justice groups, including Pax Christi USA, gathered at least 15,000 people in Washington, D.C., on April 20th for a march through the capital city to protest the war on terrorism. The march was called by the National Youth and Student Coalition, which encouraged over 100 other national groups to join the cause and help organize the event.

In a joint press statement, the coalition of peace and justice groups called for: "A U.S. foreign policy based on social and economic justice, not military and corporate oppression; an end to racial profiling and military recruitment targeting youth of color and working class youth; government funding for programs to benefit the economic victims of the 9-11 attacks and the recession; an end to the degrading and secret imprisonment of immigrants; increased funding for non-military-based financial aid for education; full disclosure of military contracts with universities."

Several other major marches took place that day, including a Palestinian Solidarity March, a march against "Plan Colombia," and a protest of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings that were taking place in the city that weekend. The groups joined together to march from the Washington Monument to the Capitol Building with total numbers up to 100,000 people.—Tara Dix
