USCCB takes a leap into the future
The Web site of the United States Catholic Conference of Bishops is now equipped with video streaming capabilities. Visitors to the site can view video clips of USCCB meetings like the 2002 Social Ministry Gathering, news items like "Diocese of Salt Lake City rolls out the red carpet for the world," interviews with bishops, and a special report on the "Faith on Film 2002" festival in New York City. In November and December, visitors could also view portions of the semi-annual bishops' meeting.
Monsignor Francis Maniscalco, USCCB Secretary for Communications, said the goal of the project is "to see how effectively Internet technology can provide an opportunity for the bishops to communicate with the public directly as they deliberate on a wide range of issues facing church and society."
The USCCB hopes that the service will be particularly useful to students at Catholic colleges and high schools.
Video streaming is made possible through funding from the Catholic Communication Campaign, the department of the USCCB that is also responsible for several series of award-wining public service announcements on television. These series, "Talk to the Ones You Love" and "Reconciliation," have appeared on national networks over the last four years. They are now available for viewing on the Web site as well.Tara Dix
