Signing for life
THE CHERISH LIFE CIRCLE in New York, in collaboration with Catholics Against Capital Punishment, has been collecting signatures for a "Declaration of Life," which states that the undersigned, if murdered, does not want his or her killer executed by the state. Mercy Sister Camille D'Arienzo, who initiated the petition drive three years ago, estimates that some 40,000 people have signed the notarized statement so far.
The Declaration of Life reads: "I hereby declare that should I die as a result of a violent crime, I request that the person or persons found guilty of homicide for my killing not be subjected to or put in jeopardy of the death penalty under any circumstances."
The statement further instructs family and friends to deliver copies to the judge and district attorneys overseeing the case.
